Heavy burr on the underside of the part, or burr on one side of the hole and not the other. What each pattern tells you, and which ones point at the machine rather than the tooling.
A rough lip on the die side of the part that has to be deburred by hand, or that is failing inspection outright. Sometimes it is even all the way around the hole. Sometimes it is worse on one side. That difference matters — it is the single most useful clue you have.
Points at clearance or edge condition. The punch and die are concentric; they are just not cutting cleanly. Look at die clearance for the material and gauge, and at how sharp the punch and die actually are.
Points at the punch not being centred in the die. Clearance is effectively too tight on one side and too open on the other, so the material shears cleanly on one side and tears on the other.
That off-centre condition comes from somewhere: a die that is not seated, a worn die holder, or — when tooling and holders check out — a worn upper turret station bore letting the punch sit off-centre.
Run the same tooling from a different station.
Burr follows the tool → tooling or clearance. Burr stays with the station while the tool runs clean elsewhere → the station bore. Worth doing before buying tooling or booking anyone's service call.
Burring rarely arrives alone. The same off-centre condition that produces uneven burr also side-loads the punch, which shortens tool life and eventually shows up as punches needing sharpening far too often and holes going out of round. Shops usually notice the deburring labour first and the tooling bill second.
